Two hospitalised after 'hazardous material' found in Worthing

Published by Ryan Burrows at 1:13pm 11th August 2019. (Updated at 5:21pm 11th August 2019)

Emergency services have lifted a cordon put in place on Worthing seafront following the discovery of a 'hazardous material' that made several people ill.

The area between Grand Avenue and Windsor Road was closed on Sunday morning after a number of people reported falling ill with sore eyes and vomiting.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue confirmed that the cordon had been lifted as of 4.10pm, although police remained on the scene to issue reassurance and advice.

We have now stood down & left the scene in Worthing, the cordon has been lifted.@sussex_police will remain in the vicinity for public reassurance & advice.

— West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service (@WestSussexFire) August 11, 2019

"A small number of people reported symptoms including sore eyes and vomiting, two of whom were taken to hospital. They have both since been discharged, and advised to go home, wash their clothes and have a shower.

"Anyone else affected is advised to do the same – and use copious amounts of water to wash your eyes.

"We’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during the incident. We are following up a number of lines of enquiry and the investigation into what happened is ongoing."
